There's a shift on Mackinac Island when fall arrives. The mornings are cooler, the light looks a little different, and the busy summer days begin to give way to a slower pace. We still have about a month left in the season, and I always find myself wanting to hold on to this part of it.
I love summer on the island, of course. But fall gives us a little more room to notice things: the first changing of leaves, a quiet walk down Market Street, or a conversation in the shop that lasts longer than it might have in July. It's a beautiful time to visit, especially if you've only ever seen Mackinac in the middle of summer.
At the shop, we're still here, welcoming visitors and enjoying these last few weeks with our team. By this point in the season, we have shared several long days and funny moments together. I am grateful for the people who show up every day and make the shop what it is.
This fall feels especially full for our family as we continue working on The 1886 Hotel. There are decisions to make almost daily, and it's exciting to see this old house slowly become the hotel we've imagined. I am looking forward to sharing more as it comes together.
For now, I am trying not to rush toward the end of the season. There's still a month to enjoy: familiar faces to see, more first time visitors to meet, and more of Mackinac in the fall to take in. If' you're coming to the island before the season ends, please stop in and say hello!
