Top 5 Travel Essentials For Visiting Mackinac in the Fall

Posted by Nicole Doud on

Are you visiting Mackinac Island this fall? It's such a beautiful time to see the leaves changing colors and enjoy the cooler weather! Mackinac is less busy during the fall, with kids back in school. It's fun to enjoy the Island when the mornings are slower and the air is crisper. I love walking down to Lucky Bean in the quiet of the morning to get my hot Chai Tea Latte and start the day off!
If you're coming to Mackinac Island this fall, here are the Top 5 Essentials for Visiting (with or without kids!)
1. Layers. If you live in Michigan, you know the mornings are chilly and then the afternoons end up being beautiful and warm. You'll want to bring a couple of layers with you and possibly even a light rain coat or wind breaker. It's a good idea to also pack a hat, headband or scarf! It can get windy and chilly when walking on the island - it's usually 5 to 10 degrees colder than the mainland, so you'll want to come prepared.
2. Backpack. You'll need somewhere to store your layers when you aren't using them, or a spot for your purchases from Little Luxuries. A backpack is easier to carry / take with you when biking around, too! A large tote can easily get in the way when walking on Main Street or riding your bike. While a backpack isn't always as cute as purse or tote, it's definitely more practical for island adventures.
3. Camera. You'll want to have a spot to document your day on Mackinac! Don't forget to pack your camera, polaroid or go pro! There are so many great things to capture.
4. Bicycle. If you plan to ride bikes throughout the island and most of your time while on Mackinac, bring your own bicycle. There are so many paths to explore - get off Main Street and ride your bicycle to see all the fall leaves changing colors. You'll love it!
5. Blanket. If you plan to have a picnic in the park, grab items from Doud's Market and spread your blanket out in Marquette Park for a leisurely afternoon of enjoying the weather, the sights and some tasty treats from America's Oldest Family Owned Grocery Store.
We hope that next time you are on Mackinac, you stop in to see us!
