little luxuries

Today’s Monday Maker is about a local favorite, Mary Lou Peters! Mary Lou lives, paints and teaches in her home on the Straits of Mackinac.
Mary Lou Peters
One of Mary Lou’s favorite places to paint is right here on Mackinac Island. She has worked to develop her own distinctive style - a whimsical approach to common themes. The hope is that her paintings leave you feeling happy and wishing you were in the place that she painted! Most of Mary Lou’s work that we carry is at The Artists Market, but a few of her magnets are sold at Little Luxuries!

In addition to painting she is the author of four books and has illustrated three books. Mary Lou also teaches painting classes in Mackinac City, on Mackinac Island and in Sanibel Island, Florida.

We are excited to have Mary Lou meters join is during Lilac Festival at The Artists Market of Mackinac Island from 2 PM - 4 PM on Friday, June 7th.

Mackinac Mittens

Today’s Monday Maker is Mackinac Mittens! Mackinac Mittens are made right on Mackinac Island by three Mackinac Island school teachers. They take vintage sweaters and repurpose them into mittens, scarves and hats. Since they are made from vintage wool sweaters, each pair is different! They are adorned with unique buttons to create a fashionable look that will keep you nice and warm.

Once you purchase your wool item from Mackinac Mittens, you will want to wash them just like you would any other wool item, inside out and on cold with a gentle detergent. Reshape and lay flat to dry - remember not to dry clean them!
Mackinac Mittens
Mackinac Mittens used to be carried at Little Luxuries, but have been moved to the Artists Market of Mackinac this season. Since the days continue to be chilly, stop in for a warm pair of gloves to keep your hands cozy.

Today’s Monday Maker is Elizabeth Hans, a Mackinac Island local who creates necklaces, earrings and barrettes that are sold at The Artists Market!

Elizabeth Hans

Elizabeth works to create jewelry and barrettes from beautiful and unique natural materials. Her work is created from natural, semi-precious stone beads, pearls, crystals and shells, as well as unique objects, like Massachusetts sea glass, from where she grew up! The beautiful hair barrettes are made from handmade, heavy watercolor paper.

Elizabeth and her husband Dan reside on Mackinac Island May - October and then live in Pennsylvania the rest of the year. Next time you are in the Artists Market of Mackinac Island, stop in to see her beautiful designs!

Little Luxuries

It’s Mother’s Day Weekend on Mackinac Island! It’s a lot chillier than I’d like it to be, but there are still plenty of ways to have fun and treat Mom to a special day, if you happen to be visiting for the weekend. Last year, my boys took me on a picnic and then to the Butterfly House for.a day of family fun!
A favorite Mother’s Day tradition for many is brunch at the Grand Hotel. Take your Mom to the Grand Buffet Luncheon in the Main Dining Room. It’s a great way to celebrate Mom in a special way to let her know that you love her!
Many of the shops on Main Street will be open, if you still haven’t found the perfect gift for Mom and need to do some last minute shopping.  Little Luxuries will be open on Sunday starting at 10 AM and we hope to see you then!

Little Luxuries
May 1st marked Little Luxuries 11th Birthday! Thank you to everyone who has made this dream of mine a reality over the past 11 years - I would not be here without your support.
On May 1st, we had some of the worst weather that I have ever seen here in May! We had a little snow, wind and just cold, cold weather. Other than the winter weather that we are experiencing, life on the island is going well! Every day in the shop we are busy unwrapping new merchandise that I can’t wait for you to see! We have so many more products arriving this month, so stay tuned for updates!
Island Girl
Our most popular item so far has been our new Island Girl Sweatshirt Dresses. They have been so popular that we already had to re-order. Many of you asked if we had a variety of colors, so we ordered a second color: heather grey!  Have you snagged yours yet? If not, do so today! (Heather grey won't be in for a few more weeks.)
I’m hopeful that spring is just around the corner. Until you’re on the island, stay updated with what’s happening on Facebook and Instagram.  Don't foget about our brother shop, Canvas and Paddle. They are celebrating their birthday on May 5th with a 20% off sale - so go check that out (Sale Valid: May 3rd - May 5th, 2019). Artists Market of Mackinac Island, our sister shop, has welcomed in so many new artists for this season. Don't forget to pop in there next time you are on the island!
As always, thanks for your support of Little Luxuries of Mackinac Island.
