Can you believe that Valentine’s Day is already here?

There are so many fun ideas on Pinterest for what to do for Valentine’s Day crafts, cards and sweet treats!
This past week, the boys and I had fun making heart gingerbread cookies (Tommy loves gingerbread cookies)!! Then we had fun cutting hearts out of construction paper, and using finger paint for our hands and feet!
I loved having this time with the boys to do crafts! I love decorating for Valentine’s Day, so I used some of their cut out hearts to decorate around the house.
Over on Pinterest, I’ve saved some fun ideas, including Valentine’s Breakfast Smoothie Ideas, Heart Shaped Quesadillas, Star Wars Valentine’s Day Cards, Heart Wreaths, Heart Banners and more! Check it out and then tell me what crafts you and your littles are going to create this Valentine’s Day!

With Valentine’s Day less than a week away, I wanted to write a quick note on the festivities that happen in our home for this lovely holiday!

I love decorating a little bit here and there for the holidays, especially the “small” holidays, too! The boys realize the importance of each holiday and decorating, even in little ways, brings me so much joy!

Our decorations come from various places. The paper napkins are usually from Hobby Lobby or the dollar store! The peppa pig valentine box is Tommy’s and Louie made his valentine box out of a tissue box last year!

I always put up a new banner for each holiday! The stitched felt heart banner and the sparkles banner are both from Etsy - I love to shop small when I can! The tie died heart banner hanging from the mantle the boys made.  I found little red hearts to spread around the candle on our kitchen table. I love to visit antique stores and that’s where I found the cute scrabble Valentine’s sign!

Of course, I have to make snacks that are holiday themed as well! Two new recipes that I found on Pinterest for this Valentine’s Day season are Valentine’s Day popcorn and Heart Shaped Quesadillas.

Valentine’s Day Popcorn from here. This recipe is super easy and super sweet!

  • 10 Cups of Popped Popcorn (I usually make our popcorn the old fashioned way over the stove top!)
  • 3 tbsp. Butter (Sweet Cream, Salted)
  • 3 cups Mini Marshmallows
  • Pretzel M&M's – Red
  • Valentine's Mix M&M's
  • Valentine’s Day Sprinkles
  • Confetti Heart Sprinkles

Mix & Enjoy! I bet the boys will always ask for popcorn this sweet from now on!

When the boys get home from school on Valentine’s Day, I plan to make them Heart Shaped Quesadilla’s!

If you have a heart shaped cookie cutter, use it to cut your tortilla into the perfect heart! If you don’t have one, scissors will do!

Place one heart on a greased cookie sheet, sprinkle with love and shredded cheese, then place the second heart on top! Cook in the oven at 350 for about 3 minutes - but keep your eye on it, just in case. Then, enjoy!

What are your Valentine’s Day traditions? I’d love to hear all about them and maybe add an idea or two to our fun plans!

Happy Valentine's Day!
"There is no remedy for love, but to love more." - Thoreau
Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays. It's simple and sweet. You don't have to go over board with gifts. A card, flowers, chocolate, cupcakes, dinner out or breakfast in bed are all little ways to celebrate and show your love on this day. I guess that's why I enjoy Valentine's Day so much - I believe life is all about the little things.
My husband, best friend, father to our children, and business partner is the rock in our lives. Andrew, a native, of Mackinac Island is our 'local grocer' (Doud's Market). We met the summer of 2006 while working together at the Gate House Restaurant. We started dating the summer of 2007 and after graduating from Albion College, I moved to Mackinac full-time to work at Grand Hotel. In 2009, the opportunity to open a small gift shop on Main Street was presented to us. Without any retail knowledge, I went for it. Andrew was by my side for support the entire way. We sure have been through many obstacles the last nine years in the 'retail world'. Without him, I would not have the strength, courage and knowledge that I have today.
September 2009, we were engaged and in December 2010 we were married on Mackinac Island (on a beautiful, wintry day!).
Since 2010, we have two beautiful, smart, adventurous boys (Louie & Tommy), and I have opened two more shops (Artists Market of Mackinac Island & Canvas & Paddle) and last summer, Doud's Market opened a new, smaller location towards Shepler's Ferry dock called Doud's Market & Deli. I never imagined to be on this exciting (frightening at times) ride with Andrew. We are passionate about our businesses, our community, our family and our love. My summer job back in 2006, changed my life and I am thankful, grateful, and blessed to have such a strong, determined man by my side.
This is one of my favorite LOVE quotes from Bob Marley:
"He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you.”

I hope your Valentine's Day isn't just a 'Hallmark' holiday for you. I hope you are loved and enjoy the little things today a little more than most days.
Love always, Nicole
