Do you ever wonder what a seasonal shop does during the off season? Here are a few things that we do to stay busy and get ready for the upcoming season!
*Spend time with family and friends! Since we are open 7 days a week for 7 months a year, I rarely get to spend time with extended family or even friends! A lot of the off season is spent with our loved ones, catching up and making memories! I also spend a lot of time with the boys when they aren’t in school. I love to take the time to make cookies for them, read them extra books or make a fun arts and craft project!
*Take trips! When it isn’t a pandemic, we spend a lot of time taking weekend trips, heading South for warmer weather! Andrew and I usually take a trip just the two of us to celebrate our anniversary and the end of one season before the next season begins! It’s nice to have just time for the two of us and to explore somewhere new!
*Evaluate the past season. Brainstorm what worked and what didn’t! I want to make sure that each season, we are improving and becoming the best shop we can to keep on selling the goodies that bring a smile to your face!
*During November and December when the storefront is closed, we are very busy mailing out online orders and then opening on select days for Island residents to do their holiday shopping.
*Order for the upcoming season! I spend a lot of time perusing catalogs, searching for new, unheard of artists and looking for unique goods for all three shops! This is one of my favorite things to do during the off season. Dream about new goodies that you’ll love!
*In January, I start to hire for the next season! If you’re interested in applying, read about the positions we have open HERE and then send an email with your resume and references to me (Nicole) at littleluxuriesmanager@yahoo.com
*Purge! I love a good deep clean! I spend a lot of time going through the shops, getting rid of old displays and thinking of ways to display goods!
*House projects! Since I’m so busy during the summer, I spend some days doing house projects, deep cleaning and decorating various spaces. Out with the old, in with the new!
The off season is filled with memories being made with our family and friends, plus administrative work to prepare for the upcoming season! It’s a lot of work, but I love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Wow, what a ride it has been the last 8 months, with our 2020 season in the books. Back in late May, I wasn't sure if a season was even going to happen. So THANK YOU for showing up, THANK YOU for ordering online, and THANK YOU for supporting our small businesses as well as all of Mackinac Island. I truly cannot thank you enough.

Our three storefronts are closed up until next spring, 2021. It's hard to even think that far in advance right now as I have been taking the last 8 months day by day. Our inventory is completed, the stores are sparkling clean, my team has dispersed across the state of Michigan and out of state - back home they go, onto other adventures. I had a great team this season. Almost every employee was new which made the beginning a challenge, but we stuck together and learned from each other and made the best of this shortened, unpredictable season. I sure miss my team already!

Now that the stores are closed up and our winter season is upon us, my focus is our online shops and planning for 2021.
Starting, Monday, November 2nd, stay tuned for some fun new things happening with us VIRTUALLY!

My family is now in Petoskey for the winter season. I will commute to the island twice a week and Andrew, my husband commutes more often as his grocery store remains open year-round. Now with a more 'normal' schedule I get to spend more time with our boys, start home projects, organize and have more family fun!

Thank you again for showing up this summer and fall. We would not be where we are without you!

Grab Donuts from Cannon Ball: Cannon Ball is located at British Landing and is the halfway point when you are biking around the island. If you want to get a donut from Cannon Ball, be sure to get there early before they sell out!
Taste Caramel Apples from Sander’s: Don’t you remember growing up and eating tasty caramel apples? Relive those fall memories on Mackinac by visiting Sander’s for a delicious caramel covered apple!
Take a walk down Main Street to look at Halloween decor: This is one of our favorite things to do as a family! Take a walk from the Island House Hotel to Windemere Point looking at all the spooky decor!
Eat Lunch at Fort Mackinac’s Tea Room: The Tea Room is run by the Grand Hotel, so the food in delicious and the view of the leaves changing is spectacular!
Carve a pumpkin: We can’t wait to carve the pumpkins that will decorate the front doors at the shop! Stay tuned to see what the staff comes up with!
Hike to Fort Holmes: Many people never make it up to Fort Holmes, but the views from the top are incredible and it’s a lovely walk up there. On your fall stay, make time to head up there!
Visit Fort Mackinac: If you haven’t visited the Fort on past visits, do it this fall! It will be less crowded and you’ll learn so much history about Mackinac Island!
Jump in a Pile of Leaves: Look around Mackinac Island for a fun pile of leaves to jump in! You’ll probably be able to find a pile to jump in on your hike up to Fort Holmes.

Grab a Warm Drink from Lucky Bean: You already know my favorite drink is a Vanilla Chai Latte with Almond Milk! What is your go - to fall drink?

Take an art class at Watercolor Cafe: Be sure to check out what fun art classes are happening this fall at Watercolor Cafe!

Get the Best Apples from Friske Orchards, Found at Doud’s Market: We love Friske Orchards in Northern Michigan and we are proud to carry their fresh apples every fall!

Pick up your favorite bottle of Witch’s Brew Wine at Little Luxuries: It is our secret wine blend enhanced with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other natural spices that makes this a crowd pleaser and favorite of Leelanau Cellars' fans. Perfect for entertaining, this wine will explode with intense flavor when served warm but can also be served chilled as an ingredient in sangria.
Is there anything you would add to your fall bucket list of things you really want to do on the Island? Be sure to let us know!
